Ethnography is so in-depth and so complete. Yet practically very difficult to use in the unusual communities and coteries. Or if you sit and wonder … is it limited or difficult to use only limited by the researcher’s perception. LET ME EXPLAIN!
Communities., bands & coteries have physical proximites and connections … but a opinion can be discussed …. have true isolation and disconnection … as they have learned the dexterous skill of willful disconnection. Red indians as the nagas of the laxdeep would give up hostilities after a few bouts of arrow shooting and end up trading their true riches for as superficial technological advancements as ‘shaving kits’ & ‘fairness creams’.
Comparatively the emerging rock band like community of your neighborhood or the ‘ghettos’ of the downtown are far more conscious of
their privacy and donot let you intrude beyond a point for years …
… all the time meeting you commonly at the train junction and the up town malls…
Limited social research techniques hardly scratch the surface here. Researcher falsely presumes most social fundamentals about their social fabric and their societies … often leading to less potent conclusion and analysis about them . The fault lies in more about the technique he relied on than his metre in making analysis and his conclusion logicality.
Ethnography inspite of its cost, difficulty and oddity is the way to go here … the suggested one here for use with sulking ‘post pregnant mothers’ … failed ‘ quitting young social drinkers’… ‘behenjis’ and bored middle class jagran chanting ‘housewives’ and what have you.
